The Joy Of Carving
The Joy Of Carving
The Joy of Carving is a craft experience designed to help participants slowdown for the sake of spoon carving. Participants focus on the tactile exploration of wood as a creative medium, learning carving techniques to shape one’s work into functional art. The workshop covers everything from wood selection, spoon designs, finishing oils, along with knife, blade and carving techniques so participants can experience the joy of creating their own hand-carved kitchen tool. Wood and carving tools are provided.
The Joy of Carving started out as group workshop where would-be carvers could attend weekend classes and over the course of several hours, learn the art of spoon carving. After class, participants would head home with a new hobby and a new kitchen tool. When Covid-19 happened, all my group workshops got cancelled. At that time I pivoted and began offering small, intimate carving classes for couples or small groups in my local area. As it turned out, private classes were a huge success and therefore I continue to offer them even as restrictions have long been lifted. So if you and a friend or partner or a small group want to get together and carve, this can happen! Spoon carving is an activity that is easily adapted to a variety of spaces so don’t let site details standing in the way of discovering your next hobby.
How It Works:
Participants attend a two day (3 hours each day) carving class. The first day will focus on knife cuts and technique. The second day will address finishing cuts , sanding, and oiling spoons.
All materials will be provided including wood, carving knives, sand paper, and finishing oil.
Participants will learn the necessary carving techniques to complete their own spoon.
Workshop location can be determined after checkout but for general planning purposed Broward County, FL is considered local
Workshop dates and times should be consecutive as much as possible. When scheduling your Day 1 carving classes please be aware that the Day 2 class ideally should be scheduled for the following day.
